About the Artist

Judith’s recently acquired Melbourne based studio and gallery are located in a pretty Eastern suburb of Melbourne and close to outlying rural properties, where much of her youth was spent pursuing her love of horses and dogs. Her work includes formal portraitures of horses and dogs and action studies, using oils, watercolours and sculpture. Please see the Gallery to view a selection of her artwork.

At a young age, Judith started riding and progressed through the equestrian disciplines of show riding and dressage. She also started sketching and kept horses at Lower Plenty, Melbourne from her early teens until she was 25. Her Belgian-born grandfather was her artistic mentor and a professional painter. He provided an early awareness and artistic environment for Judith to begin her interest in art.  It is this unique blend of skills and experience that has underpinned and inspired her work to develop as a respected equine, canine and portraiture artist.

After working for more than 30 years as a professional artist in many parts of Australia and overseas, Judith has attained international recognition in an industry where only a handful of skilled artists paint, in the elite areas of equine and canine art – horse racing, hunting, polo, dressage, quarter horses and dogs.  Judith Leman’s clients are passionate about their animals and their industry. Through her art, they want to record a living history that captures the essence and time that can be preserved for future generations.

Carolyn Webb of the Melbourne Age, wrote about Judith Leman’s work:

“In 1995 a head study of champion black gelding, Kingston Town, catapulted her into the A-list of equine artists.”

Judith’s work is found in private and public collections all over the world, including, in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, Japan and India.
