JUDITH LEMAN PROFILE
Judith's Melbourne based studio is
located in the pretty eastern suburb of Heidelberg and
close to outlying rural properties, where much of her
youth was spent pursuing her love of horses. Her work
includes formal portraiture and action studies, using
oils and watercolours.
At a young age, she started riding and
progressed through the equestrian disciplines of show
riding and dressage. She also started sketching and
kept a horse at Lower Plenty from her early teens until
she was 25. Her Belgian-born grandfather was her artistic
mentor and a professional painter. He provided for Judith
an early awareness and artistic environment to begin
an art interest. It is this unique blend of skills and
experience that has underpinned and inspired her work
to develop as a respected equine and portraiture artist.
After working for more than 20 years
as a professional artist in many parts of Australia
and overseas, Judith has attained international recognition
in an industry where only a handful of skilled artists
paint in the elite areas of racing equine art - horse
racing, hunt, polo and quarter horses. Judith Leman's
clients are passionate about their horses and their
industry. Through her art, they want recorded a living
history that captures the essence and time that can
be preserved for future generations.
Carolyn Webb of the Melbourne Age (Nov 2002) wrote
.."In
1995 a head study of champion black gelding, Kingston
Town, catapulted her into the A-list of equine artists."
Judith's work is found in private and
public collections in Australia, New Zealand, the United
Kingdom, the United States, Japan and India. She is
a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists in the
United Kingdom as well the American Academy of Equine
Art. Once a year several hunt club pieces are exhibited
and sold by Christies of London.
